After reading Throwing like a girl By James
Fallows, it had brought back some memories of when I used to play T-ball and we
would have to throw the ball to a different base. The team was a co-ed T-ball
team so all of the guys would pick on the girls on how they would throw.
Growing up I had started to hear that phrase all the time and not always
throwing like a girl but playing a game. I feel that society has changed its
ways of viewing sports and that the how the guys play sports is the
"correct" way and the way the girls play is "incorrect".
The truth is said at the end of the passage, "Everyone has to learn",
no one is born being able to do things correctly, we weren't born being able to
walk we had to learn how to do that, then learn how to play sports. No two
people play the sport the exact same way, and no two people learn the sport the
same way, everyone is going to be different and that is what makes the games
better, because everyone has a different position and different ways of
learning how to play those positions. Those different positions help make the
games more successful and each person helps contribute to the win. Everyone has
to be open and trusting to others on the team that the way they learned is a
way that can help the team. No two people learn the same way but I believe that
both of the ways they had learned work just as well as a different way someone
learned. More books are being written on the “correct” way to throw a ball and
these books are becoming more and more read by sports fans.

I like that how you talk about how people don't learn the same tasks in the same way, and that that's okay. In fact, you say that that diversity is what makes a good team. I think that you could go further and talk about how that kind of diversity applies to other areas of life, not just sports.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you mentioned everybody has to learn things. There a certain task that I am good at, and there are some things that I am really bad at. But I assure you, if I did practice some of those things that I am bad at I could learn, just how if Hillary really tried, she could throw a ball the correct way.
